Benediktiner Brewery was founded in Ettal, Bavaria in 1609 by the monks of the Ettal Monastery. They were given permission to brew beer by Prince Maximilian, Duke of Bavaria. It was held by the monks until secularization in 1803 forced it into state hands. It was later sold to Josef von Elbling in 1809. In 1856, it was sold to the Counts of the Pappenheim aristocratic family. They held it until 1898, when it was sold to Imperial Councilor Baron Theodor von Cramer-Klett, who promptly turned it over to the Scheyern Abbey, which reestablished it as a Benedictine monastery. The beer is now made with the assistance of the Bitburger Group.
