Black Star Co-Op was founded in 2006 in Austin, Texas by Steven Yarak and fifteen other member owners. Yarak had been spreading the idea of the co-op business model around the neighborhood, and on January 14, 2006 he and the other founding members met to come up with plans for the brewery. After raising $500,000 from its members, Black Star opened its brewery in 2010 in Central Austin.
