Brewdog Brewery was created in 2007 in the city of Fraserburgh, Scotland by James Watt and Martin Dickie. In 2011 they opened up some of their ownership to the public through a crowdfunding initiative, which led them to expand into a new brewery in Ellon, Scotland. This investment was followed by a purchase of 22% of the company for £213 million by private equity partners TSG Consumer Partners in 2017. Watt retains ownership of 25% of the company, while Dickie has 22%.

The company has faced persistent criticism over the years, including allegations of a hostile work environment fostered by Watt. In 2021, over 100 employees signed a letter asking for meaningful change, which was shared widely in the press and on social media. The effort led to the creation of the organization Punks With Purpose, which seeks to tackle toxic workplace culture head-on.
