Cape May Brewery was founded in 2011 in Cape May, New Jersey by Ryan Krill, his friend Chris Henke, and his father Bob Krill. Ryan Krill had been working as an investment banker, while Henke (his college roommate) was working as an engineer designing satellites. The two contemplated the idea of opening a brewery while homebrewing with Bob Krill on the Jersey Shore.

In 2011, the team found a space at the Cape May Airport and began brewing. Their first batches were only 12 gallons at a time. But by 2016, they were brewing eight thousand barrels a year. In April of 2023, the team announced that they would be purchasing fellow New Jersey brewery Flying Fish Brewing. However by June, the team had announced that the merger was no longer proceeding. The team did not elaborate on why the deal fell through, but later that year Flying Fish declared bankruptcy, and in court documents it was revealed that they had over $10 million in debt.
