Carib Brewery was founded in 1947 by Sir Gerald Wight and the Alstons & Co Company in Champs Fleurs, Trinidad. The venture was brought about in an effort by the Trinidadian government to reduce the country’s dependence on the sugar and oil industries. Wight was an industrialist who advocated for the diversification of the economy, and served as chairman of Alston’s at the time. The subsidiary he helped found was originally known as the Caribbean Development Company Limited (CDC). It took three years to bring the first beer to market – Carib Lager finally arrived in Trinidadian grocery store shelves in 1950.

By 1955, the company had expanded into different fields, so it was split off into Carib Glassworks Ltd and Carib Brewery Ltd. Both, however, remained under the control of Alstons & Co. Through various acquisitions, the company achieved a monopoly on beer sales in the island nation in 1957. By 1960, it had breweries established in Grenada and St. Kitts to meet growing demand.

In the second half of the century, consolidation affected the company, as Alstons began to swallow up even more companies. It merged with Charles McEnearney & Co to become McAL in 1976, and then again with ANSA to become ANSA McAL in 1986. It is now one of Trinidad and Tobago’s largest conglomerates, with a major presence in the automotive, construction, distribution, financial services, media, and real estate industries. In 2016, ANSA McAL purchased Florida Brewery in the United States, which discontinued its main brand in 2021 in favor of producing Carib Beer for American distribution.
