Carton Brewing Company was founded in 2011 in Atlantic Highlands, New Jersey by cousins Augie Carton and Chris Carton. Augie had been a craft beer fan for years, and was disappointed that he couldn’t find much flavorful low alcohol beer in the area. He reached out to his cousin Chris, a lawyer, to investigate what was required to open a brewery of his own. After learning about the process, the two started building a business plan together while simultaneously refining a recipe for Boat Beer, a 4% session beer.

They set up shop in their original location in Atlantic Highlands in an 1890s brick warehouse that had been a storage facility for Methodist tents and equipment for the Masons. The Cartons set up the building with a fifteen barrel brewhouse. At the time, Carton was only the twelfth brewery in the state of New Jersey. In 2018, Carton moved to a larger 10,000 square foot facility next door that now harbors the bulk of their production. Their original location, however, is still used as a taproom, retail store, and sour beer production facility. Carton Brewing beer can now be found throughout the state of New Jersey.
