Castle Lager was first brewed in Johannesburg, South Africa in 1886 by husband and wife Charles and Lisa Glass. During the ongoing gold rush, the Glasses began brewing beer for the miners and became an overnight success. In 1895, the brewery officially incorporated as South African Breweries, and two years later it was the first industrial company listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange.

Throughout the twentieth century, SAB expanded and acquired many other breweries, culminating in the 2002 purchase of American company Miller from Philip Morris for more than $5 billion. In 2016, the then-named SABMiller was purchased by Anheuser-Busch InBev for $100 million.
