Ceres Brewery was founded in 1856 in Århus, Denmark by grocer Malthe Conrad Lottrup, and chemists A. S. Aagard and Knud Redelien. The following year, Redelien and Aagard left the firm, leaving Lottrup with full ownership. In 1898, the brewery was sold to Østjydske Bryggerier, which included several other small breweries in its portfolio. Ceres then became the flagship and headquarters of the company.

In 1956, the company was renamed Ceres Bryggerierne. Ceres merged with other Danish breweries Urban and Thor to become Jyske Bryggerier in 1976. In 1989, Jyske again merged with Ceres Brewery to become Bryggerigruppen, which was renamed Royal Unibrew in 2005.
