Clown Shoes Beer was founded in 2009 in Ipswich, Massachusetts by Gregg Berman. Berman was the owner of Berman’s Wine and Spirits, and entered a contest on Beer Advocate to name a beer for Dogfish Head Brewery with the name “Clown Shoes.” Though the name didn’t win, it sparked an idea for him, and he contracted a Black IPA with nearby Mercury Brewing Company as the company’s first beer. In 2017, the brand was purchased by Mass. Bay Brewing Company, which had recently become an employee owned company through their employee stock ownership program.
