Coronado Brewing Company was founded in 1996 by brothers Ron and Rick Chapman in the city of Coronado, California. They built the brewery on the former location of Bula’s Pub & Eatery, which previously was a legendary restaurant on the island village.

In 2012, Coronado Brewing built a new 30 barrel brewhouse about fifteen miles away in Tecolote Canyon to meet growing demand. They added another tasting room in the Imperial Beach neighborhood of San Diego in 2014, the same year they were named Mid-Size Brewery of the Year at the World Beer Cup. In 2017, the company acquired a majority stake in Monkey Paw Brewing. However, by April of the following year, Monkey Paw’s original owner Scot Blair sued Coronado, saying he was owed over $30,000. In August of that year, Monkey Paw shut down for good.
