Cristal Beer was created in 1921 in Lima, Peru, by Backus & Johnston Brewery Ltd. In 1954 the brewery was purchased by Ricardo Bentín Mujica who renamed it Backus and Johnston SA Brewery. In 1996 it merged with three other breweries to become Unión de Cervecerías Peruanas Backus y Johnston SAA. In 2005, SABMiller purchased the company, and in 2016 SABMiller was purchased by Anheuser-Busch InBev. Due to antitrust regulations, however, the brand was separated from AB InBev in the United States, and there it is sold by Molson Coors.

In 2024, the brand began getting recognition online, when clips resurfaced from 2003 that showed Cristal Beer edited into scenes from Star Wars. The brand had paid for promotional placement when the movies were shown on Chilean TV, and the edits were seen as a way to avoid cutting to commercial during the airings of the movies.
