Crowns & Hops Brewing Company was founded in 2019 in Inglewood, California by Beny Ashburn and Teo Hunter. The pair had previously launched a lifestyle brand called “Black People Love Beer” which highlighted BIPOC presence in the craft beer community. The brand later morphed into the brewery, and raised over $1 million in crowdfunding through a StartEngine drive.
In 2024, Crowns & Hops merged with Full Circle Brewing Company, owners of Speakeasy Brewing and Sonoma Cider, to become Circle of Crowns Brewing Group. Each side has retained their equity as part of the agreement, but the move made the group the largest Black-owned brewery in the country by volume. However, just 6 months later, Crowns & Hops announced it was pulling out of the relationship, and returning to an independent model.
