Dark Horse Brewing Company was founded in Marshall, Michigan in 1997 by Aaron Morse. Aaron’s father, Bill Morse, owned a restaurant that would become the cradle of Dark Horse Brewery. Aaron proposed transforming this restaurant into a brewpub, which materialized and opened on West Michigan Avenue in Marshall. The transition from a brewpub to a full-fledged microbrewery took place in 1998 when the establishment’s brewpub license was converted into a microbrewery license. Subsequently, in 2000, the taproom was moved to its current location on South Kalamazoo Road.

Although it achieved success early on, Dark Horse faced financial difficulties, which led to its acquisition by Roak Brewing Co. of Royal Oak, Michigan, in 2019. This acquisition came at a time when Dark Horse was grappling with unpaid property taxes and mortgage payments. Roak was founded by John Leonne in 2015. Following the merger, the company announced that it had signed on former BrewDog executive Adam Lambert as President of the combined company. In 2021, ROAK Brewing consolidated all its brewing operations in Marshall, including a separate tap room and kitchen located on the Dark Horse campus.
