Deschutes Brewery was founded in 1988 in Bend, Oregon by Gary Fish. In 2008, the brewery opened a second pub in the Pearl District of Portland, Oregon. Fish sold some of his stake in the brewery to employees in 2013 by establishing an employee stock ownership plan. They expanded to the east coast in 2016, when they spent $85 million building a facility in Roanake, Virginia. However, the production facility never materialized, and the taproom they built to support it shut down in 2021. That same year, they acquired nearby Boneyard Beer from founder Tony Lawrence.
