Devils Backbone Brewing was created in 2008 in Lexington, Virginia, by founders Steve Crandall and his wife Heidi Crandall. The couple were inspired to start the brewery after visiting northern Italy in 1991 and experiencing German style beer for the first time. The first brewery location, which they call “Basecamp,” sits on a 100 acre property in the Blue Ridge Mountains. In 2012, a second location was added in Lexington, Kentucky, known as “The Outpost,” which now serves as the primary brewing facility.

In 2016, the brand was acquired by Anheuser-Busch InBev. The move marked the eighth craft brewery that the Belgian multinational purchased since 2011, and pushed their “High End” division over 1 million barrels of beer annually. In an interview after the acquisition, Steve Crandall revealed that his projections for capital required did not support the business model, and he hired First Beverage Group to help the company search for a buyer. First Beverage found a number of interested parties, but ultimately the team went with Anheuser-Busch because of an alignment in vision.
