Elysian Brewing was created in the year 1995 in the city of Seattle, Washington by Dave Buhler, Joe Bisacca, and Dick Cantwell. Buhler had experience with distributors, having worked in a spirits wholesaler, while Bisacca was knowledgeable with finances from his previous job as the vice president at Seafirst Bank. Buhler, meanwhile, was an accomplished brewer who had worked at Duwamps Cafe, Pike Place Brewery, and Big Time Brewing.

In 2015, the founders were approached by Anheuser-Busch InBev about purchasing Elysian Brewing, a move that Dick Cantwell vigorously opposed. However, he was overruled, and the brewery was purchased. The move came as a shock to many of their fans, as Elysian had previously used the motto “Corporate Beer Still Sucks” on their packaging.
