Energy City Brewery was founded in Batavia, Illinois in 2017 by partners David and Heidi Files. David had been homebrewing since 2005, and earned a master’s degree in chemical engineering with a focus on fermentation. He had gained some recognition when his stout had won at the American Homebrewer’s Association competition. When David and Heidi approached the city of Batavia about starting a nanobrewery, the city council welcomed them warmly, and created a new type of brewery license to accommodate their operation. He and Heidi started the brewery on just a 1 barrel system. As word grew, the demand for their beer quickly outpaced the brewhouse’s capacity, so Energy City began contract brewing their beer at Church Street Brewing in 2018, and later at Great Central Brewing in 2020. The additional capacity allowed the company to begin distributing its beer throughout the Chicagoland area. Meanwhile, the Fileses use the 1 barrel system as an opportunity to experiment with small batches and try out new flavors on their most loyal fans before they are moved to the larger brewing system.
