Evil Genius Brewing was founded in 2011 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania by Luke Bowen and Trevor Hayward. The two had met in college while studying at Villanova University, and became friends over their love of great beer. In 2017, they hired Jon Defibaugh as head brewer. However, Defibaugh was fired from the company in 2020 after posting incendiary comments in support of Black Lives Matter in the wake of the murder of George Floyd. In a statement announcing the firing, Bowen and Hayward caused confusion after falsely implying that his firing was due to anti-Black sentiments.

A group of former employees (who had recently learned they were not going to be hired on after the Covid pandemic shutdowns) quickly called out the hypocricy of the post, and described the racist atmosphere at Evil Genius. The following year, when Brienne Allen began a cascade of revelations about sexual harassment in the brewing industry, Hayward and Bowen were implicated in several posts detailing alleged harassment, assault, and mistreatment of employees, including an incident where the general manager locked a female employee in a bathroom to yell at her during a shift. In response, Hayward stepped down from the board of the local Philly Loves Beer nonprofit group. However, both founders have stayed on as owners and operators of the brewery.
