Exile Brewing was founded in Des Moines, Iowa in 2012 by Bob Tursi and his son R.J. Bob owned the local restaurant Latin King, and wanted to expand to another business with his son, who had experience working in a winery and wanted to do a project that involved production. They opened their brewery in the historic F.W. Fitch Building in Western Gateway Park.

In 2017, Exile Brewing Company expanded their brewery with a 3,800 square foot expansion, which doubled their brewing capacity. Ten 120 barrel fermentation takes were added. The project cost $3 million, and took about 6 months to complete.

The brewery faced criticism in 2022 after Amy Tursi, Bob’s wife and R.J.’s mother (and part owner in the brewery), addressed comments to the Des Moines city council criticizing homeless people in the city and calling them “drugged out, passed out.” R.J. followed up by releasing a statement on Twitter defending his mother, though that did not stop the criticism of their perceived callousness.
