Falls City Brewery was founded in Louisville, Kentucky in 1905 by Ben Schrader and a group of grocery and tavern owners. The brewery innovated in its later years, first in 1975 with the invention of the “Sta-tab” can opener now ubiquitous on beverage cans, and then later with the introduction of “Billy Beer” in collaboration with Jimmy Carter’s brother Billy Carter in 1977. However, in 1978 the company ceased production, and the brand was sold to G. Heileman Brewing. They later sold the company to Evansville Brewing Company, which brewed the beer until 1997 when it was again sold to Pittsburgh Brewing Company. Pittsburgh abandoned the trademark in 2007, and in 2010 the Falls City brand was claimed by Jon Neace, owner of Neace Ventures, who sought to bring the beer back to Louisville.
