Flying Monkeys Craft Brewery was founded in Barrie, Ontario, about 60 miles north of Toronto, in 2004 by Peter Chiodo. Chiodo had learned to homebrew as a child with his grandfather, and later honed his homebrewing skills while a student in Alabama and later Mississippi.

The brewery was known originally as Robert Simpson Brewery, and was named after Robert Simpson, the city of Barrie’s first mayor from 1871 to 1872 and again in 1876. Simpson had also founded the Simcoe Steam Brewery, which is why Chiodo named the brewery after him. However, in 2008 the company rebranded with the help of Chiodo’s wife Andrea Chiodo and his sister Patty Gardner. The name came from a sign in the Chiodo’s home that references the 1939 movie The Wizard of Oz, which read “Don’t make me get out my flying monkeys.”

The rebrand played into a goofy, cartoonish aesthetic, with the motto “Normal is weird.” With their bold flavors and uncommon ingredients, the Flying Monkeys brand took off in the area, and eventually began exporting the beer to Sweden, Spain, Norway, Belgium, Brazil and the Cayman Islands. In 2014, the company began exporting the beer to the United States, beginning with Ohio, New York, and Michigan. The company also runs a taproom and retail bottle shop out of their brewery in Barrie, and has a capacity of about 10,000 barrels per year (the equivalent of 310,000 gallons, or about 1.17 million liters).
