Fort Point Brewing was created in 2014 in San Francisco, California by brothers Tyler and Justin Catalana. The two owned the popular brewery Mill Valley Beerworks in nearby Marin County, and set up their brewery in a former military motor pool depot in the Presidio of San Francisco, making their brewery the only one located on National Park Service land. Ironically, this also precludes the company from selling their beer onsite.

The company added a kiosk in the Ferry Building in San Francisco in 2016. That year, they raised $3.5 million in capital to fund distribution to 12 counties, which they did through a self-distribution model. The lack of distributor partners was unusual for a brewery of its size, and requires more upfront capital, but allows them to retain a higher margin on their beer. That model began to sunset in 2019 when it signed with eight distributors in southern California, and ended for good in 2021 when it sold its Bay Area rights to Matagrano Inc.

In 2018, they purchased Black Sands Brewery in San Francisco’s Haight neighborhood, but they shuttered it in 2022. That same year, it opened what it called its “Flagship Beer Hall” in the Valencia neighborhood of San Francisco. In 2023, Fort Point added cider to its production portfolio.
