GOLDSTAR beer brand was created in the year 1950 in the city of Ashkelon, Israel by Eretz Israel Beer Industries Ltd. It was created by brewmaster Menachem Berliner, and was originally marketed as a subbrand of their other product, Nesher Beer. In 1965, the brewery merged with Leumit Brewery to become National Brewery, which was purchased in 1985 by Tempo Beer Industries. Heineken, who distributes their beer with Tempo, has a 40% stake in the business.
