Great Divide Brewing Company was founded in 1994 in Denver, Colorado by Brian Dunn. Dunn had built out a business plan and completed a marketing study shortly after he finished graduate school in 1993, and he found a location in the Ballpark neighborhood of Denver to start his business. The brewery quickly achieved critical as well as commercial success, earning their first Great American Beer Festival award with one of their first batches. In 2001, the company purchased their facility, and in 2008, the brewery opened a new facility with triple the production capacity from landfill.

In 2016, a group of employees at the brewery created the Great Divide Green Team to minimize waste created by the facility. By 2018, the company had achieved a 6.39 to 1 water to beer ratio, measuring the amount of water required for each gallon of beer. The brewery was also diverting 99% of its waste.

In 2025, Dunn sold Great Divide Brewing Company to Wilding Brands, also based out of Colorado.
