Heidelberg Beer was first brewed by Columbia Brewing Company in Tacoma, Washington in 1912. Originally it was known as Alt Heidelberg, meaning “Old Heidelberg” in German. In 1953, Columbia changed its name to Heidelberg Brewing Company to reflect its core brand. The company was purchased by Carling Breweries in 1958 for $3.5 million.

Carling sold off its American division in 1976, merging with National Brewing Company of Baltimore, and the Heidelberg brand was included in the deal. In 1979, the new Carling-National was purchased by G. Heileman Brewing Company. Since they had previously purchased Rainier Brewing in nearby Seattle, they were forced to close the Heidelberg brewery due to antitrust laws, and the brand was discontinued shortly theareafter.

In 2016, craft brewery 7 Seas Brewing opened a second location on the former premises of the Heidelberg brewery, which led to the resurrection of the Heidelberg brand in 2021.
