Henry Weinhard’s was created in 1862 in Portland, Oregon by Henry Weinhard. Weinhard had apprenticed as a brewer in his native Germany before immigrating to New York City in 1851. He slowly moved west across the country, eventually landing in Oregon in 1857, where he started his first brewery with George Bottler. The partnership dissolved quickly, and he sold his stake and went back to working for a previous employer in Washington State. However in 1862 Weinhard moved back to Portland and bought the Henry Saxer Brewery, which he would rename after himself. By 1890, the brewery was the largest in the Pacific Northwest.

In 1928, the company merged with rival Portland brewer Blitz to become Blitz-Weinhard. In 1979 the brand sold to Pabst Brewing Company, which four years later sold it again to G. Heileman Brewing Co. By 1996, Heleman went bankrupt, and Henry Weinhard’s was sold to Stroh. It only lasted with them for three years before Stroh abandoned the brewing business entirely, selling the brand once again to Miller, which was at the time a subsidiary of Philip Morris Companies Inc.

Later in 2002, Miller came under the ownership of South African Breweries (SAB), which became known as SABMiller. In 2008, SABMiller and Molson Coors Brewing Company formed a joint operation in the United States called MillerCoors LLC., which also was responsible for all of its brands. When SABMiller was purchased by Anheuser-Busch InBev in 2016, SABMiller’s stake in the joint venture was sold to Molson Coors to satisfy regulators. The company also makes soft drinks and a line of hard sodas under the Henry Weinhard’s brand name.
