Holy City Brewing Company was founded in 2011 in Charleston, South Carolina by Joel Carl, Sean Nemitz, Mac Minaudo, and Chris Brown. Carl and Nemitz were homebrewers who had worked together as pedicab drivers before coming up with the idea of starting a professional brewery. They brought on Brown, who had recently graduated from brewing school, as the head brewer, and Minaudo, who had a warehouse space they could use to start the brewery.
