Karl Strauss brewery was started in 1989 by Chris Cramer and Matt Rattner in San Diego, California. Cramer’s cousin, the eponymous Karl Strauss, was a former brewer at Pabst Brewing, and had a post-retirement career of consulting with some of the biggest names in beer. Strauss worked with Cramer and Rattner, offering his recipes to the brewery. They named the brewery after him in his honor, and built their first brewpub in downtown San Diego. At the time, San Diego did not have any craft beer brewpubs. The move would spark a movement in the area, now one of the most popular craft beer destinations in the country.

Two years later, the company began distributing its beer, and the same year they established a second location in Sorrento Mesa. In 1996 they opened a production facility in Pacific Beach. The company would go on to establish more locations through California, including at Disney’s California adventure and Universal Citywalk. In 2016, Karl Strauss was named Mid Sized Brewery of the Year at the Great American Beer Festival. The company continues to be run by Cramer and Rattner.
