Kirin Beer was created in 1885 in Yokohama, Japan, and was originally known as The Japan Brewery Company. In 1907, The Kirin Brewery Company was spun off as a separate legal entity. In 1996, Kirin formed a partnership with Anheuser-Busch to create Kirin Brewery of America, which was responsible for production and distribution of Kirin in the United States. In 2006, the partnership expanded, and Anheuser-Busch took over full operations of the beer in the United States. Two years later, Anheuser-Busch was sold to InBev to form Anheuser-Busch InBev, which now owns the rights to the beer in the United States.

Kirin’s original deal with Anheuser-Busch InBev is set to expire at the end of 2024, and the company has announced that starting in 2025, the beer will be made in the United States by its subsidiary New Belgium Brewery” in Fort Collins, Colorado, and Asheville, North Carolina.
