König Ludwig Brewery was founded in 1871 in Munich, Germany by Prince Luitpold of Bavaria. After the monarchy was deposed in 1918, the brewery merged with Munich Union Brewery in 1920. In 1955, the Wittelsbach family (who claim royal lineage) took over control of the brewery. Since 2001, Warsteiner has been in a joint partnership with the Wittelsbachs, and manages production and marketing of the beers.
