Mad River Brewing was founded in 1989 in Blue Lake, California by Bob Smith. In 2019, the company was sold to the Yurok Agricultural Corporation, a wholly owned commercial entity of the Yurok tribe in Humboldt county. In 2024, the company was sold to the Paskenta Band of Nomlaki Indians, a federally recognized tribe located in Tehama and Glenn Counties.
