The Mayflower beer or cider brand was created in 2007 in the city of Plymouth, Massachusetts by Drew Brosseau. Brosseau was born in California’s wine country, and moved to Massachusetts to get his master’s degree at MIT. He was formerly an investment banker, and claims to be a tenth great grandson of John Alden, who was the cooper for the beer barrels on the Mayflower. Many of the brewery’s beers are named in recognition of the Mayflower voyage, such as their beer 400, a double IPA that was released in 2020 in honor of the four hundredth anniversary of the landing at Plymouth rock.

After noticing that there were no breweries in Plymouth, he spent a year building out a business plan and taking brewing apprenticeship courses to prepare to start the brewery. Brosseau funded the brewery himself, and opened in 2008 with two brewers and a director of sales. Within a year, the beer was already featured in 75 bars and restaurants and 60 package stores. They switched from bottles to cans in 2016, and in 2017, the company renovated and expanded its taproom to serve more consumers. Currently, the beer is distributed throughout Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Vermont, Maine and New York City.
