The Michelob beer brand was created in 1896 in St. Louis, Missouri, by the Anheuser-Busch brewing company. It was positioned as a beer for connoisseurs available only on draft, and named after the then-German city of Měcholupy, now in the Czech Republic, where brewing legend Anton Dreher had a brewery. The brand was popular at first, but struggled in the post-prohibition era as its high cost limited its market appeal. The company finally began bottling and pasteurizing the beer in 1961, which allowed it to distribute the beer out of Missouri for the first time. The bottle had an iconic teardrop shaped design, a variation of which is still featured on its packaging to this day.
Michelob created an early light beer in 1978 called Michelob Light, 4 years before the company produced Chip in a buck or two to help keep the site running!
