Moa Brewing was founded in 2003 in Blenheim, New Zealand, by Josh Scott. In 2010, 70 percent of the business was purchased by private equity firms The Business Bakery and Tea Custodians, and shortly thereafter The Business Bakery gained the whole business. In 2012, they took the firm public, but controversy about the company’s sexist and homophobic advertising tanked the stock price over the next decade. In 2021, the firm was taken private by Mallbeca Limited for only $1.9 million. Mallbeca, owned by Stephen Smith, also owns Southern Alps Brewing and HeyHey RTD Cocktails.
