Ottakringer Brewery was founded in the Ottakring district in Vienna, Austria in 1837 by Heinrich Plank. It was originally named Planksche Brewery, until it was taken over by brothers Ignaz and Jakob Kuffner in 1850. Ignaz’ son Moriz Kuffner took over in 1882.

In 1905, Kuffner converted the company to a joint-stock company, though he still held the majority of the shares. However, due to his Jewish origin, he was forced to sell his stake under value when Austria was illegally annexed by the Nazis in 1938. His stake was given to Gustav Harmer, who was expelled from the business after the war. He and the Harmer family later compensated the Kuffner family for the distressed sale, but retained ownership of the company. By 1962, the company was managed by Gustav’s son Gustav Harmer Jr., and his brother-in-law Engelbert Wenckheim.

The brewery went public in 1986, and is now traded on the Vienna exchange under their parent company Ottakringer Getränke AG, which also owns a mineral water company and a beverage distributor.
