Pelican Brewing was created in 1996 in Pacific City, Oregon by Mary Jones, Jeff Schons, and Darron Welch. Welch had been brewing at Appleton Brewing Company in Wisconsin, where he was dissatisfied with his job. In 1995 he visited Oregon, where he grew up, for a conference. It was there that he saw an ad for a new brewpub looking for a brewmaster, and after connecting with Jones he got the opportunity to help start the company.

In 2013, Pelican Brewing added a second brewery in Tillamook, Oregon, which was followed by another brewpub on Cannon Beach in 2016 and a third in Siletz Bay in 2021. They’ve won Brewery of the Year at the Great American Beer Festival four times, as well as at the World Beer Cup three times. They now brew over forty thousand barrels of beer each year, and distribute to six states.
