Badische Staatsbrauerei Rothaus (Rothaus State Owned Brewery of Baden) was founded in 1791 in Grafenhausen in the Margraviate of Baden, then a part of the Holy Roman Empire and now a region in Germany. In 1760, the Benedectine Monastery of St Blasien purchased an inn known was the Rothe Haus. Thirty years later, they resolved to start brewing at the site and had a functional brewery by 1791.

Soon though, secularization began to take hold throughout Germany, and in 1806 the monastery’s properties were seized by the Grand Duchy of Baden, by then an independent state. That government entity held the brewery until 1918, when the monarchy was abolished throughout Germany. It’s successor state, Baden-Württenberg has held the brewery ever since. Although the brewery is technically a stock corporation, 100% of the stocks are held by the state.
