Samuel Smith’s Brewery was founded in 1847 by John Smith in Tadcaster, England, originally as The Old Brewery. Smith bought the brewery from David Backhouse and John Hartley, who had recently mortgaged the brewery from the widow of its previous owner, William Hartley. After Smith’s death in 1879, it was run by his brother William, who left it to his nephew Samuel in 1886. Samuel renamed the brewery after himself, and it has stayed in the Smith family ever since.

The brewery owns over 200 pubs in the United Kingdom, though it is difficult to determine the exact number as the company is very closely held and does not publicize much about its business. Its current owner, Humphrey Smith, has caused considerable controversy for the brand due to his mercurial and severe attitudes. In 2011, he kicked out a gay couple for kissing in one of his pubs, resulting in a “kiss-in” protest at the site by gay rights activisits. In 2020 he completely shuttered a pub allegedly because he heard a man utter the word “fuck” on the premises. The pubs also do not allow laptops or cellphones to be used on its premises, and have no music or televisions playing.

Samuel Smith’s beers are marketed as organic, and all but its Old Brewery Bitter and Yorkshire Stingo are vegan. In the United Kingdom, many of its beers are still available to be served on cask.
