The Schlafly beer brand was created in 1989 in St. Louis, Missouri, by Tom Schlafly and Dan Kopman, under the name of the Saint Louis Brewery. Schlafly wanted to focus on brewing traditional beer styles, which he thought the United States was lacking. In 1991, they tried to open a small brewpub, but ran into legal issues with Missouri law, which didn’t allow breweries with taprooms to distribute. They worked with legislators to change the law, over the objections of the much larger Anheuser-Busch, allowing them to begin distribution in 1993.
In 2012, Schlafly and Kopman sold 60 percent of the business to Sage Capital, retaining 30 percent between them. Kopman departed the business in 2016 to become CEO of Baltimore’s Heavy Seas beer, selling his stake in the business in the process. Sage held the business until 2019, when they sold the majority of their interest back to members of the Schlafly family, with David Schlafly leading the ownership stake. Tom Schlafly is once again chairman, and owns 17% of the business.
However, the family has had their disputes. When the company filed for a trademark in 2011, Tom Schlafly’s cousin, and son of homophobic conservative activist Phyllis Schlafly, sued Shlafly brewery. The court ruled in favor of the brewery.
