Solemn Oath Brewery was founded in 2012 in Naperville, Illinois by brothers Joe and John Barley. John Barley began becoming interested in craft beer in 2001, when his parents moved to Brussels, Belgium while he was studying at DePaul University. While visiting them, his understanding of beer expanded, and during another trip with Joe to Carlsbad in 2010 he saw what other brewers were doing and began coming up with a business plan.

By the following year, the Barleys had funded their proposal and began working on a plan to open the brewery. They settled on Naperville because it was a location outside of the city of Chicago, where they could benefit from cheap rent while still serving the population in the city. Never having been a homebrewer, John began interviewing brewer candidates, and found Tim Marshall, who had previously worked at Rock Bottom. In 2014, Solemn Oath was thriving, and built an expansion of their brewhouse that doubled their capacity.
