Brewery St Bernard began making beer for the Trappist monastery of St Sixtus in Vleteren, Belgium, in 1946. The brewery, located in nearby Watou, was founded by Evarist Deconinck, and soon brewmaster Mathieu Szafranski joined the enterprise. They brewed beer on behalf of the monastery until 1992, when the International Trappist association ruled that only beers brewed under the supervision of the monks themselves qualified as Trappist beer. The monastery began brewing again under the name Westvleteren, and Brewery St Bernard rebranded their beer St Bernardus.
