Pivovary Staropramen was founded in Prague, Czechoslovakia in 1869 by an investor group led by Gustav Noback. In 1898, the brewery merged with nearby Braník Brewery, and by the 1930s the brewery was the largest in Czechoslovakia. At the end of World War II, however, the brewery was nationalized. With the fall of the USSR, the brewery was privatized in 1992 under the Prague Breweries Group. English company Bass purchased the company in 1996.

In 2000, Belgian company Interbrew purchased Bass’s brands, and when that company merged with the South American company AmBev in 2004, it became known as InBev. When that company purchased Anheuser-Busch in 2008, European authorities asked that they divest of their Eastern European assets, and Staropramen was sold along with several other brands to CVC Capital Partners, which renamed the group StarBev. Those assets were later sold to Molson Coors in 2012.
