Strela is a brand of beer first produced by the brewing company CERIS in Praia, Cape Verde starting in 2006. CERIS, or Sociedade Caboverdiana de Cerveja e Refrigerantes, was previously owned by the Portuguese company Madeira Brewery. In 2005, CERIS was sold to the Equatorial Coca-Cola Bottling Company. This sale marked a significant transition for the brewery, as they needed to replace their popular Coral lager, for which they no longer held the rights. This necessity led to the birth of Strela, a new beer that quickly gained popularity.

The Equatorial Coca-Cola Bottling Company, founded in 1997 and based in Casablanca, Morocco, is a significant player in the beverage industry. As a distributor of Coca-Cola products and a manufacturer of other beverages, the company operates extensively throughout North and West Africa. Its acquisition of CERIS and subsequent introduction of Strela beer demonstrated its ambition to diversify its product offerings and expand its market reach.

Strela is brewed exclusively on the island of Santiago, Cape Verde’s largest island, which measures approximately 34 miles in length and 18 miles in width. Despite the brewery’s limited geographical footprint, Strela’s popularity extends far beyond the island. The beer is exported to several countries, including Gambia, Guinea, and Portugal, showcasing its international appeal. This widespread distribution highlights Strela’s quality and the effective marketing strategies employed by the Equatorial Coca-Cola Bottling Company.

In addition to the original Strela beer, the brewery also produces a popular variant known as Kriola. This variant is named after the local citizens of Cape Verde, reflecting the brewery’s deep connection to its cultural roots. The creation of Kriola not only caters to local tastes but also strengthens the brand’s identity and appeal within Cape Verde.

Strela’s success can be attributed to several factors, including the rich brewing traditions of Cape Verde, the strategic vision of the Equatorial Coca-Cola Bottling Company, and the quality of the beer itself. The brand has managed to carve out a significant niche in the competitive beverage market, both locally and internationally. As a result, Strela has become one of the most popular beers in Cape Verde, celebrated for its unique taste and cultural significance.
