Sullivan’s Brewing Company was founded in Kilkenny, Ireland in 1702 by Daniel Sullivan, although it is alleged that Sullivan, a protestant, bought the property in trust for Pierse Bryan, a Catholic. According to legend, the brewery went defunct in 1918 after the property was lost in a bet on a horse race by then-owner Master Sullivan. The brand was picked up by rival Smithwick’s, and when their company was sold to Diageo in 1965, they retained the Sullivan’s name. In 2013, Daniel Smithwick and his father Paul Smithwick revived the brand with American businessman Michael Meade.
