Suprema Cerveza was first brewed in 1967 in Santa Ana, El Salvador by Industrias La Constancia. La Constancia had been founded sixty one years earlier by Rafael Meza Ayau, and was originally known as Rafael Meza Ayau & CIA. In 1939, when the company took over the production of Coca Cola for El Salvador, it was split into three divisions. Industrias Cristal de Centroamérica (which managed the non-alcoholic portfolio), Embotelladora Salvadoreña (which produced bottles) and Cervecería La Constancia (the company’s brewing division).

In 2001, Industrias La Constancia was purchased by South African Breweries, which at the time was one of the largest breweries in the world. The following year, SAB purchased Miller Brewery in the United States, and then became known as SABMIller.

In 2016, Anheuser-Busch InBev acquired SABMiller. The Salvadorean authority requested that the company divest itself of the Regia and Suprema brands. Those two brands formed roughly 11% of the Salvadorean beer market, and with ABInBev’s ownership of other major domestic brands like Ace Pilsener, as well as major imported beers like Budweiser, the government was worried they would have a virtual monopoly. In 2018, a deal was finally reached to sell the brands to Cervecería Salvadoreña, a new company that was created for the purchase of the properties.

As part of the deal, the Superintendency of Competition allowed Anheuser-Busch InBev to produce the beer on behalf of Cervecería Salvadoreña until 2024. The company had planned on starting to build their own brewing facility starting in 2019, but those plans were delayed by the pandemic. With production still not fully at 100% capacity, the Superintendencey of Competition later extended the deal to allow AB InBev to produce the beer for a further 18 months.
