Surly Brewing Co. is an American beer brand that was established in 2005 in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota. It was founded by Omar Ansari and Todd Haug, two passionate beer enthusiasts. In 2014, they opened a $20 million beer garden in Minneapolis, after lobbying the state to change alcohol laws to allow them to operate as a brewpub. It closed the beer garden after Unite Here announced their intent to unionize on site, although they claimed it was due to falling sales. When the threat passed, they reopened the brewery in 2021.
