Sweetwater Brewing was created in 1997 in Atlanta, Georgia by former college roommates Freddy Bensch and Kevin McNerney. The two worked part time cleaning kegs at a nearby brewery before graduating in 1993. When Bensch visited Atlanta for the summer Olympics in 1996, he saw an opportunity to start a craft beer brand in the area. He and McNerney raised the funds to build out the brewery.

Sweetwater quickly gained critical acclaim, and in 2002 was recognized as Small Brewery of the Year at the Great American Beer Fest. The following year, the company moved to a 25,000 facility to meet capacity needs. In 2008, McNerney left the company.

The company sold a minority stake to private equity company TSG Consumer Partners in 2014, which also has a stake in Brewdog and Pabst Blue Ribbon. The brand was later sold in November of 2020 to Canadian cannabis company Aphria for $300 million. Less than a month later, Aphria purchased the publicly traded Tilray in a reverse acquisition, and began going by that name.
