Tamarack Brewing was founded in 2007 in Lakeside, Montana by husband and wife Andra and Josh Townsley, alongside head brewer Craig Koontz. The couple had always wanted to start a family business, and in their first year of business they had only brewed less than 400 barrels of beer. In 2011 they opened a second location in Missoula, Montana, and by 2017 they had grown their total operation to nearly 4,500 barrels.
