Tanduay Ice was introduced in Cabuyao, Laguna in the Philippines in 2009 by Asia Brewery as an alcopop version of its spirit-namesake, Tanduay. Tanduay, the number one selling rum in the world, is also sold by Asia Brewery.
Asia Brewery was founded in 1982 by Lucio Tan, a Filipino businessman who had previously started Fortune Tobacco Corporation in 1966, and later purchased the General Bank and Trust in 1977, which he renamed Allied Banking Corporation. Tan’s company holdings are estimated to have a worth of over $5 billion USD, and his personal wealth has been valued by Forbes Magazine at about $2.8 billion USD.
The brewery was established to compete with the dominant San Miguel Corporation. The company began with their first flagship beer, Beer Hausen Pale Pilsen, which was later renamed Beer Na Beer after a trademark dispute with San Miguel’s Beer Pale Pilsen. Asia Brewery also licensed several global brands for years, including Carlsberg, which helped vastly increase the company’s market share. Most of those licenses have since expired, although the company still holds the license to brew and market Heineken in the country.
In 1988, Tan purchased Tanduay Distillers, which was originally founded in 1854. The purchase cost Tan about 1 billion PHP. The introduction of Tanduay Ice as a brand extension in 2009 followed a growing trend of flavored malt beverages that use malt as a base, but are meant to imitate a mixed cocktail. The brand’s “Original” flavor uses grapefruit and citrus flavors, but the product also comes in lemonade, cranberry, pomelo, “red energy,” and “blue fresh” flavors. The beverage is popular among many younger Filipinos as a beer alternative.
