The Olde Mecklenburg Brewery was founded in 2009 in Charlotte, North Carolina by John Marrino. Their focus has been on beers that follow the Reinheitsgebot, the German beer purity law that only allows water, barley malt, and hops in beer. Marrino had worked for a water treatment company in the 1990s and spent four years in Germany with them, learning about German beer in the process. In 2002 the company moved him to Charlotte. After leaving the company two years later, he began thinking about building a brewery, a plan he began realizing in 2007.
